A Day in the Life of a Meteorology Intern

Jul 24, 2017
2 min read

Working at WHIO News Center 7 has been an amazing experience for me! I am able to work with a team of meteorologists to learn more about broadcasting, forecasting, and just what it’s like to be a part of the weather team. Working with each meteorologist has really helped me understand what it will be like to have a job in this field.

Because I’m assigned a great deal of different tasks, each day is very different from the last. In my experience so far, I’ve been able to sit in on live newscasts, go out with meteorologists to work on packages, spend one on one time with the meteorologists to listen to any advice they have, and be a part of a multimedia market that offers an incredible amount of opportunities. To give you a better idea of what it’s like to be a meteorology intern here at Cox Media Group I’ve written out what an average day looks like for me.

10:00 AM- Arrive at work.

10:05 AM- Get settled in. Check my email for important messages.

10:15 AM- Chat with the other meteorologists (McCall and Kirstie) about what to expect in the forecast.

11:00 AM- Start forecasting for the noon show.

11:30- Build weather graphics for wall time later.

12:00 PM- Watch the live noon cast.

12:30 PM – Noon cast finishes.

1:00 PM- Green screen time. I get to practice and use my show that I built earlier in the day. During this time, I record myself to use the tapes for my demo reel.

2:00 PM- Practice is over, and now it’s lunchtime!

3:00 PM- Sit in on the forecast discussion between the meteorologist (McCall and Eric) about what is to be expected for the next five days.

3:30 PM- Print out the final forecast that they have come up with to do the weather portions of the Dayton Daily News and Methode (our WHIO Weather App).

4:00 PM- Update the weather for the Dayton Daily News. This includes a written forecast, updated graphics to fit each forecast for every day, and a written paragraph about weather occurrences in the Dayton area. This may include record-breaking temperatures, rainfall, or something as simple as an overview of the week.

4:30 PM- Update Methode along with the written forecast for the next five days, and match up graphics that go along with the forecast.

5:00 PM- Wrap things up, and head home for the day!
